What is the challenge?

Pushing you out of your comfort zone

Our challenges run twice a year. Each one is a 12-week creative adventure designed to help you explore your own creativity through embroidery. Every programme focuses on different aspects of the creative process – whether that’s how to tell stories through design, build your technique, or experiment with colour. No prior experience is needed – just a willingness to dive in and discover what you’re capable of.

You’ll receive a curated bundle of materials, access to a whole host of online resources, weekly creative prompts, and a supportive online platform to guide you through the process from first idea to finished piece. Each challenge centres on a different skill set – some develop your stitching technique, others help you shape your painting style or sharpen your eye for inspiration. We vary each one so they build on what you’ve learnt before.

Most importantly, you’ll be part of a community – sharing the journey, building confidence, and cheering one another on.

If you’re looking to kick-start your creativity, or get out of a bit of a rut, this is the perfect place to begin.

Why would I want to take part?

A 12-week creative adventure

If you’ve ever felt stuck creatively or just wished for a bit more structure and encouragement, this challenge is for you. Here’s why we think you’ll love it:

You’ll gain confidence – Learn to trust your creative instincts and push past self-doubt.
You won’t be alone – Connect with a supportive group of fellow makers, bouncing ideas and sharing progress.
You’ll have a plan – A structured 12-week timeline guides you step by step, making the process approachable and fun.
You’ll experiment & grow – Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you’ll develop your own style and try new techniques.
You’ll actually finish something – No more abandoned projects! With prompts and accountability, you’ll see your ideas come to life.

This isn’t just about embroidery—it’s about storytelling, creativity, and the magic of making something uniquely yours.

Don't just take our word for it...

Just loved it! Every element! And felt it was a great rhythm to get 'homework' every week...took me away from day-to-day life and unbelievably/embarrassingly my phone usage went down by about 90%! What a success!

Emma

If, like me, you find new things sometimes a bit daunting, then the Fabled Thread is for you. Eppie, Meg and all the team are so supportive, full of helpful advice and ideas. It creates a feeling of ‘Yes I can do this!. What more could you ask for? Dive in and enjoy.

Sue

One of the most rewarding creative experiences I’ve taken part of. Eppie and team guide you from an initial concept to the grand finale—hanging your art on the wall. I knew I’d enjoy the embroidery, but the 12 weeks proved to be so much more than needle and thread. I was pushed out of my creative comfort zone with plen...

Kristin

The community has been so inspiring and encouraging! Everyone has been so supportive and generous with their feedback. It has been a real joy to be a part of this. I've had fun trying different creative techniques, such as using cut outs to help with composition, and I'm already looking forward to the next challenge! ...

Laura

This has been the most fun project I have taken part in for a long time. At every stage I felt that I had support and even though, at times, I felt that my artistic talents were lacking, the Fabled Thread team and other members of the project were so helpful. There was always someone saying “Keep going, have faith, d...

The Fabled Thread materials are so beautiful and inspiring to use, staff are so encouraging and ‘nicely’ guide and motivate you, fellow course participants have been an absolute joy. Have simply loved the experience, thank you.

Nicky

An amazing course to help me open my soul. This creative course allowed me to have a creative voice, and communicate my story. I really enjoyed the step by step process I had to follow and learn how to approach a new project from start to finish. All the support materials that where provided where immensely useful for ...

Lorena

I have loved this project! The whole process gave me confidence to try something new and to stretch myself - it has been a joy. The kit is fantastic with everything you need. Joanna

I signed up for The Story Challenge in the spring and have loved every single stage. I am a complete beginner and this course has given me knowledge and confidence. The course is well thought through at every stage and a joy to be a part of. I would sign up for another course with The Fabled Thread and would not hesita...

Samantha

“The Story Challenge” was a great way for me to take a quote that I have loved for years and turn it into a physical art piece. Although the quote wasn’t an actual story, it was written with a feeling of a story. Translating it to an embroidery was truly a challenge! I loved all the suggestions and support of my cohort...

Heather

If you think a creative challenge sounds scary, I can assure you that it’s a challenge in the best kind of way! From someone who is very new to stitching.

How do I take part?

Look out for the next challenge!

We run two Story Book Challenges a year, from April to July, and from November to February runs, with sign-ups open to Studio Members throughout in either March or October respectively. We will send out a newsletter in the run up to the next challenge beginning with details on how to take part. Each challenge is limited in numbers to ensure that the group isn't too large - therefore it is on a first-come first-served basis. The course is also only open to Studio Members.

It costs £150 to take part in one of the challenges, which includes all your materials and access to the 12-week programme. You will be able to see more detail on what is specifically involved when the next challenge is open.

How is the challenge structured?

A weekly structure to take a fear out of designing

Every challenge is different so that they build on each other and teach you different skills. As an example, here is the structure from our last challenge all about storytelling:

  • Week 1: Explore resources, find inspiration & connect with others.
  • Week 2: Story Time Doodles – warm-up exercises to loosen up your creativity.
  • Week 3: Experiment with design composition using cut-outs & sketches.
  • Week 4: Finalize your design & share it with the group.
  • Week 5: Learn how to translate your design onto fabric.
  • Weeks 6-8: Start stitching! Weekly prompts & community check-ins keep you on track.
  • Week 9: Paint your frame to complement your artwork.
  • Week 10: Add a motif to your frame for that finishing touch.
  • Week 11: Celebrate & share your finished piece!
  • Week 12: The challenge wraps up until next time.

What will I get out of the challenge?

A whole lot of creativity for £100

  • A bundle of materials – Everything you need, from fabric & threads to frames & paints.
  • A structured 3-month plan – Weekly prompts guide you through the design process.
  • An exclusive virtual course – 12 videos covering every step, from idea to final piece.
  • A private online community – Share progress, ask for advice & connect with like-minded creatives.
  • Creative breakthroughs – Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, you’ll push yourself in new ways.
  • A completed, framed artwork – Something you’ll be proud to show off!

Creations from Past Challenges

This isn’t our first rodeo! We have now run two challenges and had over a hundred people go through our programme—ranging from total beginners to seasoned makers. Each person has had their own take on the creative brief, found confidence in their own style. The results were nothing short of incredible.

The real magic, though? It wasn’t just about the finished pieces. It was the process—the shared struggles, the breakthroughs, the unexpected moments of confidence-building. Participants supported each other, shared insights, and most importantly, felt less alone in what can sometimes be an intimidating creative journey.

The Impact of The Challenge

I was in a creative slump for several years, and being part of this has jump-started my artistic and creative passions again. It’s the most important thing that has happened to me this year. I enjoy being part of a community of curious, creative, and like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those fro...

Heather

I have discovered within myself a creative fervour I didn't know I had. The resources (motif bank, cut-out library) Eppie has put together are fantastic resources to have if you feel "stuck" somewhere in your creative process but the true gold that this space is truly lies in the access you gain to courses, challenges ...

Camille

I’ve always considered myself to be a creative person, and have dabbled with many different outlets for that creativity, but have time and again ended up hitting a wall - self-doubt inevitably creeps in, and I get intimidated and give up. I had become somewhat stagnant, unsure where to go next and lacking motivation an...

Emily

I really enjoyed this project – it was such a fun and rewarding experience. Each weekly brief was interesting, well thought out, and totally manageable to complete in an evening, which made it easy to stay engaged. I loved the creative challenge, and it’s exciting to know I can now apply the same practices to my own wo...

Louise

I am finishing up the Fabled Threads Story Challenge which I thoroughly enjoyed (and can’t believe is ending!). I found Eppie’s Creativity Method to be hugely helpful and think it will be a system that I will use a lot going forward. And, I think I will go forward! I am already envisioning other embroideries I want to ...

Julie

It's the supportive community element of this challenge that I can dip in and out of that I enjoy the most. Simple things like 'is this tree too big?' or 'do these colours work?' are quickly answered in an incredibly supportive and encouraging way from the team at The Fabled Thread and others taking part in the challen...
