The Improvisations Cards Set

The Improvisations Cards Set

Creativity isn't just an innate talent. It's something we can learn, practise and develop. Our Improvisation Cards & Dice are a completely new way to approach abstract art, encouraging you to think differently, relinquish control and discover compositions you might never have imagined.

The set includes 36 beautifully illustrated cards, each featuring a creative prompt on one side and an inspiring quote about creativity on the other, alongside a dice to guide your decisions.

By rolling the dice and following the prompts, you'll gradually build your own abstract compositions, allowing chance to make decisions you might otherwise never consider. It's a wonderfully freeing way to break out of familiar habits, overcome the fear of a blank canvas and experiment with colour, shape and arrangement.

Originally developed to accompany our Improvisations appliqué collection, these cards can be used with our fabric bundles to create your own textile artwork. But they're equally suited to painting, collage, drawing or almost any other form of abstract art.

Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced artist looking for a fresh perspective, these cards are an invitation to let go of the rules, embrace the unexpected and see where a little improvisation takes you.

Olive the Ostrich

Olive the Ostrich

Meet Olive from our Appliqit range

Appliqit is our playful take on appliqué: a simple cut-and-stick fabric craft that lets you build your own colourful animal from layers of cotton fabric.

Think of it as a fabric jigsaw. Using the templates provided, you apply Bondaweb to the fabric, cut out each shape, arrange the pieces to create your animal and then iron everything into place. There is no complicated sewing or specialist technique involved, making Appliqit an accessible craft project for beginners as well as more experienced makers looking for something a little different.

Each kit contains everything you need for the appliqué itself, with pre-selected cotton fabrics, Bondaweb, full-size templates and step-by-step instructions.

What’s included

Each Appliqit kit contains:

  • A selection of cotton fabrics for your chosen design

  • Bondaweb iron-on adhesive

  • Full-size cutting templates

  • Step-by-step printed instructions

  • Thread and needles where required for the finished project (cushions and stockings)

What else will I need?

You will need a pair of sharp scissors, a pencil and an iron and ironing board.

Depending on the project, you may also need the item you would like to appliqué your finished design onto, such as a cushion pad or backing fabric. You can add these in the purchase process. We also offer a finishing service for UK customers for our cushions and stockings.

How difficult is it?

Appliqit has been designed to be straightforward and accessible, even if you have never tried appliqué before. The process is predominantly tracing, cutting, arranging and ironing, so you do not need any previous sewing or embroidery experience. The trickiest part is simply taking your time when cutting around some of the smaller shapes!

It is also a lovely project for adults and children to make together.

For the framable designs, because the appliqué pieces are bonded rather than traditionally sewn around every edge, the process is considerably quicker and more approachable than traditional appliqué. On the stitched designs (cushions and stockings) the pieces do need to be stitched to ensure longevity. You have the choice of hand-stitching or machine stitching. This stage would need to be done by an adult.

How long does an Appliqit take?

Most Appliqits can be completed in a few hours, although the exact making time depends on the size and complexity of the design, and how leisurely you fancy being about it. Smaller animals are quicker projects, while our larger cushions and stockings have more pieces and naturally take a little longer.

We tend to recommend allowing 2-hours for the smaller designs and 6-hours for the larger stitched designs.

What age is Appliqit suitable for?

Appliqit is designed for both grown-ups and younger makers. Children who are confident using scissors can do much of the making themselves, although adult supervision and assistance with the iron is required.

Recommended age: 8+ years

For younger children, it also works particularly well as a project to make alongside an adult, with children choosing, positioning and assembling the pieces while an adult takes care of the ironing and any stitching required.

How do I finish my Appliqit?

Some of the projects are intended to be framed (which you will see in the product photo) whilst other projects are designed to be made into cushions or Christmas stockings. For the framable pieces, we sell a range of unpainted frames and paints which are designed to compliment the kits. For the stitchable pieces, we have videos showing how to finish the design as well as selling backing fabric and piping, or for customers in the UK, we offer a finishing service to make your applique panels in cushions or stockings. You can simply send it to us and we will finish them for you.

See the product table for the exact dimensions of each kit.
