Our Woolies collection takes inspiration from the incredible woolen images of ships stitched from the 18th Century onwards. Whilst these artworks are large, they are very simple and relatively quick to stitch.
What are Sailor's Woolworks?
Background to the range
In the 18th and 19th centuries, crafts became a popular pastime for British Navy and Royal Marines sailors during long periods away from home. Alongside other nautical arts such as wood carving, scrimshaw, and rope work, woolworks—known as woolies—emerged as a form of folk art that showcased a sailor’s meticulous needlework skills (an essential requirement for any seafaring occupation!) while also serving as a charming work of art in its own right.
These pieces were stitched using whatever wool or textiles were available, never intended to hold monetary value or be considered fine art. However, in recent decades, as folk art has gained renewed appreciation, woolies have become recognized as a cherished craft. Our range draws inspiration from this rich heritage while infusing it with a distinct Fabled Thread touch.

This range is our interpretation of traditional woolwork, reimagined with a modern, colourful, and imaginative twist. These pieces are unapologetically modern yet celebrate the rich heritage of sailors' woolwork.
Much like their namesake, these designs are meant to be stitched freely and without constraint. These kits aren't about perfection—they're about creating texture, adding character, and embracing a folk art approach to stitching. They allow you to craft a piece of art that will last for generations to come!
Can I stitch this as a beginner?
Easy needlepoint designs for every level
Despite their impressive scale and complex stitching style, these needlepoint kits are among the easiest to create. Instead of using a typical tent stitch or cross-stitch, these designs are stitched with long stitches of random and varying lengths. This allows you to cover a large area quickly without worrying about counting stitches as you go.
You'll stitch the design onto a printed tapestry canvas, guided by the instruction booklet, which indicates the stitching direction for each block. If you're unsure, simply watch the video below for Nautilus and Calypso, which demonstrates the process—so you'll know what to expect before you begin.

What are your options
We have two different framing option for your woolie, ranging from unpainted frames so you can decorate it yourself, through to our bespoke hand painted frames. The woolies are statement pieces to last for generations and our very special frames are a work of art in themselves.
You can also take these pieces to any good framer and you'll be able to work with them to create something really special and unique to you.
