The History of Batik
This is an extract from our Studio Weekly from 7th March 2025.
At the Fabled Thread, we're passionate about textile crafts in all their forms. Textiles are so varied - from quilting to embroidery, tapestry to knitting, felting to wax-resist, there's so much to explore and discover!
The thing that textiles have in common is the length of time taken to create them, from the creation of the threads or wool, dying of the fibres, to the often handmade crafting process - textiles are a real labour of love. Textile crafts have been created and developed for millennia all across the world, with history and cultural meaning woven into the fabric.
Each week, we'll explore a different textile craft, delving into its history and cultural meaning, as well as the process of crafting it. Through deep delves into different textiles, Textile Focus aims to help you discover something new, even if you're already familiar with the craft. This week, we're exploring the history of Batik.
