Studio Talks Recording: Composing Designs

This is the recording from our Studio Talk on Composing Designs. During this session we talked through the 6 core decisions you make when coming up with a design composition. By breaking down the design process into these individual decisions, we simplify the process and take the fear out of creating your own designs.

In the session we talked through these 6 steps in relation to one of my own designs, showing you each of the decisions I made along the way. I then talked through some simple ways you can experiment and play around with composition using paper cuts. We then talked about the 6 steps in relation to other pieces of art - from folk art, to more known artists like Matisse. I showed everyone how they can use these same principles to understand why they like certain elements of a design from other artists and then how to apply the same principle in their own work.

This talk is complementary to our talks on Finding Inspiration and How To Draw Badly, as well as being extended videos to accompany our Freestyle Embroidery Course. These are a way of you developing your skills and building creative confidence.
